Mountain Heritage High School is a rural consolidated high school located on the west end of Burnsville, the seat of Yancey County. Burnsville was formed in 1833 and is home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Mountain Heritage High School opened in 1977 after merging Cane River High School from the west end of the county and East Yancey High School from the east end of the county. 

The total school population for the fall of 2009 is 774 students. MHHS is on a block schedule, with classes meeting an average of ninety minutes each period.  Students can select from over 100 courses via classroom instruction, virtual/on-line courses, or dual-enrollment.  All students are in one of four North Carolina Courses of Study: Career-Prep, College Tech Prep, College/University Prep, or Occupational.

Mountain Heritage is staffed with sixty-two teachers, eight assistants, five support personnel, four office staff, ten bus drivers, five custodians, six cafeteria staff, three assistant principals, and one principal.
