Welcome to MHHS...Home of the Cougars!

Welcome to Mountain Heritage High School's online home. We hope that you find it useful and informative. MHHS is a rural consolidated high school located on the west end of Burnsville, the county seat. Burnsville was formed in 1833 and is home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. MHHS opened in the fall of 1976 after merging Cane River High School, from the west end of the county, and East Yancey High School, from the east end of the county.

Our high school strives to deliver the highest quality education possible. We are proud of our strong academic programs, our many excellent co- and extracurricular activities that are available to the student body, and our outstanding athletic programs. MHHS is on a block schedule with classes meeting an average of 90 minutes each period. Students can select from over 100 courses via classroom instruction, virtual/online courses, or dual enrollment.

  • 2014 Young Advocates Institute Enrollment Now Open for interested Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors... The content of the 2014 Young Advocates Institute is rooted in a framework to empower, strengthen decision making and build skill-sets of 13 to 17 years old youth. Some of the topics to be covered will be healthy dating, impact of media and pop culture (music, television and social media), human trafficking, sexual assault and bullying prevention, and writing workshops. Of course there will be fun activities planned as well.  DATES: July 18-20 WHERE: NC A&T University, Greensboro, NC COST: $35 (Includes 2.5 nights of suite-style lodging, meals, snacks, and wellness activities) WHAT:This project houses, trains, and brings together 200 teens, ages 13-17, from across Virginia and North Carolina for a weekend of ...

  • Corn Hole Tournament This Week... We will be hosting a Corn Hole Tournament during Smart Lunch this week (May 26th - May 30th). The finals will be held at the Relay For Life on June 6th, 2014. Winner will receive a fabulous prize! :) ****Money raised goes to the American Cancer Society**** Check your student email to sign up! Two people per team, with an entry fee of $6 per team, $3 per individual. You can pay your entry fee to Mr. Sullivan in the Guidance Office.

  • Getting Ready for Testing at MHHS!... MHHS Students and Parents,MHHS will be testing during the last week of school, June 9th through June 13th, 2014. Please make sure that you/your student(s) are here during that week of school.   • MHHS Dropout Rate Lowest in School History... Press Release from YCS April 2014 Board Meeting:MHHS Dropout Rate is Lowest in School History Mountain Heritage High School Principal Kevin Huskins reported at the regular meeting of the Yancey County Board of Education on April 7th that the Mountain Heritage High School dropout rate has just been announced for the March 2013-March 2014 timeframe and is the lowest in the school’s history. The previous dropout rate of just over 3% from March 2012-March 2013 improved to 1.6% for this past year. Across North Carolina the state average dropout rate dropped from 3.01% last year to 2.45% this year.   • Registration for 2014-2015 beginning...          The Registration Process is beginning for the MHHS 2014-2015 school year.
