Welcome to MHHS...Home of the Cougars!

Welcome to Mountain Heritage High School's online home. We hope that you find it useful and informative. MHHS is a rural consolidated high school located on the west end of Burnsville, the county seat. Burnsville was formed in 1833 and is home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. MHHS opened in the fall of 1976 after merging Cane River High School, from the west end of the county, and East Yancey High School, from the east end of the county.

Our high school strives to deliver the highest quality education possible. We are proud of our strong academic programs, our many excellent co- and extracurricular activities that are available to the student body, and our outstanding athletic programs. MHHS is on a block schedule with classes meeting an average of 90 minutes each period. Students can select from over 100 courses via classroom instruction, virtual/online courses, or dual enrollment.

Please take the opportunity to get to know our administration, departments, and teachers by checking out Our Staff. Also, while you are here, look into what our Clubs and Athletics have to offer and check our online Calendar for upcoming events and information; spend some time watching our new student newscast - CougarCast, listening to the MHHS Podcast, created by our Media students, and viewing our online student newspaper, the Heritage Highlight, powered by our Student Ambassadors; take a look at grade level information provided by the Counseling Department and look over facts about our new Bullying Prevention Program. For information from our Schedules to Lunch Menus, or from Scholarship Information to Driving Directions, you'll find it all here on our website!
